An extensive manufacturing complex located on the outskirts of Jakarta is dealing with radioactive pollution following an official team found traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing plants within the area, which includes companies that export frozen marine products.

Urgent Measures and Goods Recall

The finding has led to emergency cleanup efforts and the moving of local inhabitants, coming after a comparable contamination alert in the United States that was traced back to the Jakarta plants.

A major multinational retailer is among the companies that have withdrawn items from their shelves after the finding.

Probe and Detection of Contamination

The country's officials launched an inquiry after the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a consignment of chilled breaded shrimp sent by a local firm.

The FDA released an warning advising suppliers and retailers to discard the product and not sell it, although the detected level was far below the authority's intervention threshold. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had found would not pose an immediate hazard to the public.

The FDA explained: “The primary health effect of concern after longer term, ongoing low dose contact (eg through consumption of polluted products or liquid over time) is an increased risk of the disease, resulting from harm to DNA within body cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Medical Examinations

Radioactivity scans showed at least 22 factories in the manufacturing zone were contaminated. The Indonesian taskforce did not identify the twenty-one other production facilities, but said they would promptly undergo decontamination procedures carried out by the country's atomic energy agency.

A senior official declared that residents living in highly polluted areas would be moved until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Medical officials also performed checks on nearby employees and people living close to the industrial zone, identifying 9 individuals who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. They were sent to a medical facility before being cleared to return home.

Decontamination and Isolation Measures

The affected locations will right away receive decontamination procedures by Indonesia's atomic energy institute. Authorities have further selected the area of a scrap metal plant as an isolation center for polluted goods.
