A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts propose the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
