Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Departs Following Move Into Chicken.
The head of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the UK might have hit maximum pizza demand while broadening the company into chicken products has been ousted after tensions with its directors.
Executive Transition
Andrew Rennie is departing after just two years in charge, and will be replaced on an interim basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a new leader.
Rennie, who served at the company for more than two decades, had attempted to redirect the UK's largest pizza takeaway chain towards poultry-based products, stating recently there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He said poultry was the most rapidly expanding food category in the globe.
Board Disagreements
Reports indicate that there was friction between Rennie and the directors over his approach and business vision, although Domino's release said he was stepping down “through mutual consent”.
New Product Introduction
In the autumn, the chain introduced its poultry brand – which the former chief called a “major strategic shift” for the company – and is trialling it in select stores in the North West region and the province.
While the company is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in 2026 as scheduled, it views fried chicken as an addition to its core pizza business.
Board Comment
Ian Bull, the Domino's chairman, stated: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to enhance value and value creation in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing identifying the suitable leader to direct the disciplined execution of that expansion plan.”
Industry Challenges
In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said orders declined by 1.5 percent in the third quarter. In the summer, it alerted that the takeaway market had “intensified” as it blamed economic uncertainty in the period before the budget and higher payroll outlays for disappointing revenue and a 15% drop in interim earnings.
Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut announced the shutting of dozens of outlets a recently, after the company behind its British operations faced financial collapse.
Health Initiatives
Responding to market shifts towards better nutrition, the company has launched reduced-calorie products, such as its thin-crust selection of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as vegan and gluten-free options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 calories. A big margherita has over 2,100, while a personal has 909 calories.
Interim Management
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and was formerly with the betting firm a well-known operator. It is believed that she prefers not to occupy the CEO position long-term.
She commented: “We have a several current development and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to carrying out at pace.”
She added these involved additional efforts on the company's logistics network and new item creation, and its rewards program.
Domino's is also lacking a full-time finance director until March 16, when a new appointee starts from the drinks company C&C Group. For now, Snow acts as interim finance chief.
