Hamilton Island, a Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the vision and dedication that the family owners has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the land is developed, including a substantial range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
