Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An new term emerged several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by medical experts like paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their whole family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. Officials rejects these accusations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is charged with. But while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, it seems, is what unity looks like.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A competition that once promoted peace has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
