At least 64 civilians were killed in a police operation targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's history.

Four security agents were among those killed during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. More than 80 people were arrested.

Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with gunfire, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the headquarters of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.

State officials stated a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Community members have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

Access ways continue shut throughout the region.

Criminal Expansion

The criminal network has been growing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces said over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the mission, in addition to numerous weapons.

Raid Preparation

The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies comes after a year-long investigation.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Large-scale police operations are not uncommon in the South American nation ahead of significant global gatherings in the country.

The UN climate summit COP30 is set to occur in the northern urban center in November.
